Fundamental Critical Care Support (FCCS) is a hybrid course for training non-intensivist healthcare professionals management of critically ill patients during the first 24 hours of critical care. The course concentrates on adult critical care. Lectures are viewed on-line at anytime and half-day skill stations are at SimTiki on scheduled dates below.

The Fundamental Critical Care Support (FCCS) hybrid course addresses fundamental management principles for the first 24 hours of critical care. Lectures are viewed online at anytime and half-day hands-on skill stations are scheduled at SimTiki Simulation Center in Honolulu Hawaii.

Hybrid FCCS Course Outline:

PART I Online: 

  • Pre-Course Quiz: Must be completed prior to viewing lectures
  • Online Lectures (6-7 hrs): Self paced – must be completed prior to part III
  • CE/CME credit hours provided by SCCM – claimed as each online module is completed

PART II:

  • Skill Stations at SimTiki (5.25 hrs)
  • CE/CME provided by Hawaii Pacific Health – See CE/CME tab for details

PART III:

  • Post-Course Online open-book Quiz (~1 hr): Must be completed within 2 weeks of PART II Skills Stations at SimTiki

PART I Pre-Course quiz must be completed prior to viewing PART I Online Lectures & PART III post course quiz.

PART I Online Lectures and PART II Skill Stations at SimTiki may be completed out of sequence.

SCCM Certificate Requirements:

    • Completion of online lectures
    • Completion of in person skill stations
    • Open Book post-course test score 70% or higher

  • To better prepare the non-intensivist for the first 24 hours of management of the critically ill patient until transfer or appropriate critical care consultation can be arranged.
  • To assist the non-intensivist in dealing with sudden deterioration of the critically ill patient.
  • To prepare house staff for ICU coverage.
  • To prepare nurses and other critical care practitioners to deal with acute deterioration in the critically ill patient.

  • Prioritize assessment needs for the critically ill patient.
  • Select appropriate diagnostic tests.
  • Identify and respond to significant changes in the unstable patient.
  • Recognize and initiate management of acute life-threatening conditions.
  • Determine the need for expert consultation and/or patient transfer.
